The Old Red Trail DVD - $29.95
Prairie Public’s documentary, The Old Red Trail, chronicles the early beginnings of east-west road travel across the state of North Dakota and illustrates the highway systems’ adaptations and progress over the past century. Although I-94 follows virtually the same path, the Old Red Trail was a very different highway from the one we know today. Our 70 mph, well-marked, divided four-lane Interstate had its beginnings in an un-surfaced, barely graded trail that allowed travel at the rate of 3.5 mph with directions marked only by red bands painted on fence posts. Early postcards, photographs and an array of home movies mark the changes from Model Ts to T-Birds as well as the shift in the availability of services – food, fuel, lodging - construction techniques, speed, traffic and more.
